So you're out at the bar or a party, and you can't stop checking out that hot chick/guy on the other side of the room. S/he is with friends, a mixed group perhaps, so it would be kind of awkward to approach them without looking like a fool. So instead, you whip out your mobile phone, upon which has been loaded an application that broadcasts your picture, relationship status, and a pseudonym (no real names, for privacy reasons) to the immediate area. In addition, you'll see everyone else in the room on there who has the same application loaded, with the same information. There are little checkboxes on your phone beside each name, and if you like what you see, you can mark it. If there's a match (i.e., that person has also noticed you), the application will let you know. From there, it's up to you to close the deal!
This would obviously be very useful for singles, and even people in relationships who get hit on more often than they'd like would have an incentive to use it. It's like having an engagement ring without being engaged.

How would the other person know? Would they be checking their cellphone each time they get hit on? I'd suggest that sending along your picture could also come back to haunt you.
I think there was or is some wireless wearable toy in Japan that played a similar role.
It would take a while for this to catch on. It might work better if the bar supplied these devices to its patrons for use while in their establishment.
They used to have nightclubs where the tables had phones, and you could call other tables.
Interesting problem with choices, what if you knew in advance that there isn't anyone in the bar that you are compatible with, would you stay away, would your potential match stay away also since you never went in?
