College/grad school PhysEd | |||||||||||||||||
The US today faces both an obesity and a mental health crisis.The outlook for the future is bleak. Exercise can definitely relieve the first problem and is often beneficial to people suffering from depression. Unfortunately, we learn nothing about fitness and exercise after 10th grade of high school unless we are on a sports team, read books/magazines, or pay for expensive courses or personal trainers. However, wellness education should continue throughout college and graduate school as a mandatory non-graded credit (so no GPA stress, my overachievers) and consist of both health and physed components. Given that 15% of America's GDP is spent on healthcare (way more than in other countries), it's about time that America understood that a person's wellness is as important as his or her writing skills.

I'm not sure the problem is that we need to learn more. We just need to do more. I know how to use a stair master or an elliptical trainer. I just have to make time for it.
Most spectator sports - football, baseball, etc, do not provide real fitness. There is too much standing around. Better to have the kids take a quick walk around the block.
