Most people have piles of old alkaline batteries and other small batteries laying around. Unfortunately these are often times tossed into the regular trash but shouldn't be due to concerns of heavy metals and other toxics that you don't want to end up in a landfill or being incinerated! Coinstar machines have proven incredible successful at providing an convenient way for consumers to aggregate change into useful currency. What about having coinstar-like machines at grocery stores where customers can drop off old batteries and receive either a coupon for money off new batteries or simply money off their next shopping trip. The company who operates the machines would then be able to sell the batteries to a recycler since there would be a large and constant supply.
The idea could even be expanded to include cell phones and other small electronic devices. Some electronic stores, like best buy, currently allow you to drop off old cell phones but 1) You don't get any money for doing so and 2) People frequent such stores much less often than supermarkets

Or a deposit system as with bottles, etc. Get money back from a recycler.
