Green Remedy for Clogged Drain | |||||||||||||||||
Living in an older home, I am tired of my shower drain being constantly clogged. Not only is standing in a pool of dirty water pretty gross, but clogged drains also leave a grimy mess along the sides of the tub. While Drano has long been the quick answer to this problem, I am reluctant to use such a heavily toxic product that will eventually harm aquatic habitats. I have read about some non-toxic solutions, but these often take a great deal of effort. As a student with limited free time, I usually do not make this extra effort and continue to leave the drain clogged. I would like a simple, non-toxic solution to clear my clogged drains. Perhaps it could be a small tablet made from baking soda and dried white vinegar that can be placed in the drain before a shower and react with the warm water. During the shower, the tablet will foam and clear away the gunk that is stuck in the drain. This reaction will allow the water to flow down the drain without the guilt of using harmful substances. This whole process will take little effort, and leave the bathtub much cleaner and safer (grime can be slippery!).

Although it is not the most green product on the market, the most effective way I clean drains is with a new 2-liter of Coca Cola. The carbonation works quite well at cleans out residue in the pipes, and it is quite a bit cheaper and safer than draino. I have found it to be more effective than the most natural remedies, but wish I could find the equivalent of the soda water without the high-fructose corn syrup at the same price.
