Surrogate Markers for Clinical | |||||||||||||||||
Pharma companies currently spend billions of dollars getting a drug approved by the FDA because Phase III trials use "clinical endpoints" such as death to determine whether a drug is superior to existing treatments. Science has uncovered several serologic "biomarkers" that circulate in the bloodstream and can be measured with great accuracy. Many studies have shown that these biomarkers are useful in predicting which patients will respond to a particular treatment. I suggest that Pharma companies utilize surrogate endpoints to shorten the length of clinical trials and cut costs significantly. This also benefits patients buy getting more drugs approved in shorter periods of time.
