Machine sewable buttons | |||||||||||||||||
Although some sewing machines can sew on buttons through the holes provided it would make the possibility universal to all machines if a plastic button were molded with a 1/4 inch circle of tough cloth was exposed in the center of the button so it could be sewed through the cloth center onto the fabric of the clothing.

In between seeing the title and reading the actual idea, this was exactly what I was thinking. Are these not already available?
Sounds like a good idea. I expect it would take some development to get the size and type of cloth right for it to be easily sew-able but still withstand the tension a button exerts. Also, the bond of the cloth to the plastic would almost certainly mean that you'd want to have the cloth inserted into the mold before the plastic is injected, to make them behave as one. Glue would be too difficult.
I know that a skilled seamstress can machine-sew a regular 4-hole button (but I can't).
such a mature industry..I'm surprised this isn't done.
