A turnstile, also called a baffle gate, is a form of gate which allows one person to pass at a time. The turnstiles are designed to be used in public and private lobby entry control applications, will improve tailgating and piggybacking detection while allowing items like carts and luggage to pass through undetected.
The turnstile or resolving door installed in public transport locations like metros and railyway stations are always in motion most of the time during the day. Lot of mechanical energy contributed by the public passing through the gate is getting wasted in these points. The idea is to use this mechanical energy for different purpose.

Subway and bus passengers could also be put on a treadmill that runs the length of the vehicle since they're just standing there anyway doing nothing and the exercise would do them good. Treadmills could also be put into supermarket lines and other places where lines form.
The stores could sell shots of Gatorade at the checkout.
Increasing the effort to turn the turnstile would also make it easier for the pickpockets. It is already difficult enough to get through the gates at the Metro without some thief grabbing your wallet or bag as you leave the platform while the thief escapes on the Metro train.
Having the gates generate power would increase the amount that one would have to push to go through them. Not that it would be a problem for me, but it might be for grandma.
As with all such "person powered" generating systems, it won't generate enough energy to be economically viable, the least of which would cause inconvenience (reade useage resistance) to the users of the devices.
It is true the with enough people, real work can be done--look at the pyramids.
Maybe we could design huge turnstiles, something like a hundred feet in diameter, with 200 arms sticking out from it--People wouldn't have to join a gym to exercise, they could just go to that particular city park and join-in the turning of the turnstile. If they wanted to walk more slowly, they could get closer to the center on the arm, or faster, farther out.
You could socialize, or listen to your ipod while you helped to power the city. You could meet new people and already have something in common with them. Chanters could chorus a rhythm to push to, like rowing an ancient ship.
If I'm not mistaken, 'Conan the Barbarian' got really buff pushing a turnstile in the 1982 movie.
Okay, I'm joking. I agree with classicsat.
