Standard plugs? | |||||||||||||||||
Why don\\'t car manufacturers place standard plugs in cars. You should have several plugs throughout any car. All that is required is to put a couple of power inverters in the car, and wire them to an outlet in the car. It makes sense to me.

Great idea. But again, another thing to add to a car that will break someday. I think we'll add microwave ovens next. Cars already have TV's internet, DVD.
Sometimes I wish for a simple car that's just a car. Crank windows, no airbags, no ABS, no fancy stereo.
I believe I saw this at this year's autoshow locally. I don't remember which make--I'm thinking it was a luxury car. Of course, RV's do this.
I think the big risk is that people will expect to be able to draw 20 amps from one of these plugs, like you can in your house. I don't see many inverters that go that high. Probably easily solved with circuit protection and a warning sticker.
The problem would be people trying to pull too much power off of the inverter. I quick fix would be to put a little tag with a picture of what they can plug in.
That or just put a massive inverter that will handle any load that you can throw at it. I have seen a couple of 3000 watt inverters for pretty cheap.
I just cant believe the ignorance in the car company's. I would pay and extra $500 for a "Power Pack" at the time of purchase of a vehicle. Why would they not offer this?
Why do they not offer it? Because few people want something that will add cost for an item they don't need. And dealers don't toss in add-ons that don't increase sales. For $500 you can add it to your vehicle, aftermarket.
As many times I've been yearning for an easy plug-in to make blended margaritas while I was camping I've learned to like on-the-rocks rather than invest in a stand alone generator ($329, I just read the ad) or inconverter.
On the other hand, I know people who installed a second alternator in their vehicle just to handle the extra power required by thier aircraft-style fog lights. If you want to pay for it there are options out there.
I got a 300 Watt inverter for $30 on Amazon. It powers my Xbox 360 and phone chargers just fine. You can get an even better one for a little bit more.
i beleive the lexus LS sedans have inverters in them - as do many of he minivans on the market.
