I saw a simliar idea on here about creating a WIFI confrence call system. I know the difficulty right now is that the WIFI networks being set up could not handle all the traffic, but not having to install phone or broadband jacks all over an office in my mind is a huge advantage over the existing system.

If GSM format were used I think a similar idea would be great. As I understand it, GSM compresses voice to something like 160bps (!)(?) If CB and HAM stuff could be combined with this I think we'd have an excellent FREE service. Everything would (have to) be open source so that everyone could build their own hotspots. WIFI is highly complex, I think, and IP tends to waste half it's bits... I would like to see a more efficient and simpler packet system be used. (such exist, and I experiment with them.)
