this is perhaps an idea for ebay... an on-line "yard-sale" that is searchable by neighborhoods. Would have to be organized at a fairly micro level (street names or subdivisions of a town, maybe zip codes). This would work just like ebay but would limit searches and have browsing capability just for a limited geographic area. This would be a great service for home owners that want to have a yard sale, without going to the trouble of a yard sale. People could browse their geographic area. If they see something they like -- it's in the neighborhood -- the distribution process is very much simplified. (distribution limited to purchaser pick-up).

It's called Craigslist, and in the USA at least, it results in more transactions than Ebay already. craigslist . com

eBay has a geographical search feature that lets you sort by proximity to you.

Why would this be different than craigslist? Why would people pay for this if they can do it for free?

The eBay thing has more overhead control over it, to lessen the likely hood of scammers, etc.

I think this would be a great idea as a Software as a Service type website where people could pay a small fee or use an ad supported site where people could run essentially a continuous yard sale where they could list items at any time and schedule a set time for people to pickup their selections and pay for the items.

Key would be:  Ease of use for non-technical folks Access to either stock photos or the ability to easily upload a photo to the site (MMS - cellphone to the site would make it easy for even nongeeky grandmas to use) Rudementary inventory control

Since it would be cash based essentially and no shipping or packing costs the seller would not suffer as much from a failed transaction as they would on eBay, and no per-item fees.  If someone "orders" the item it goes out of circulation and after the scheduled pick up time it could go back into the listings if the person didn't show up.

It could be easily marketed to collectors and others who try hard to be the first person at every yardsale to get first pick of everything.  To keep it exciting you could do it in a way that would make everything show up at once at a set time like the opening of a yardsale so people could need to compete for the best stuff just like a real yard sale.
