Many erosion and sediment control measures for construction sites are sized to accommodate 2-10 year storms, but are woefully inadequate to deal with larger storms. During construction, the earth is left open for 2-3 weeks before it must be seeded for erosion control. Grass seed, once established, cuts down splash erosion by 80-90%, but it is often not in place when a storm hits.
To reduce splash erosion, Why not establish a light mesh above construction sites, suspended by several poles over the breadth of the construction site. This mesh would need to be strong enough to bear the weight of the rain. The mesh would simulate the interception service of an intact forest canopy, reducing the force of rainfall on the site.
