CD/DVD write on both sides | |||||||||||||||||
Why not have a two sided CD/DVD on which you can write Data on bothsides. If you scratch the cd/dvd on one side you can use the otheras a back-up

The CD standard does not permit double sided media, since the content layer is at one surface. DVD might, but might be annoying, so they have dual layer. If you are worried about redundancy, get two discs
Probably you may need a a thicker cd to be able to write on both sides anda new CDROM to read and write on both sides. The only reason I came up withidea is to make better use of a cd - useless cds just adds up the plasticjunk on the earth.
A thicker CD would be out of specs for the CD standard. All the mechanisms are being manufactured for the CD standard thickness and diameter. If you want to break the already established CD standard, you might as well make it dual layer.
It makes no sense at all to make a double sided optical drive of any sort, especially to keep it small, as things are getting.
Higher density media in the same standard sized drive is the way to go. With that, critical data could be written twice, or in a self recoverable redundant manner. If need be, dual layer discs could be used (but the as said, the CD standard itself does not support that.
