Universal Jumpstart Socket | |||||||||||||||||
You find that the car battery is dead in your parking lot, oron a highway. What do you do? Call the towing comapny orscratch your head. Why not equip cars with a Jumpstart socketso that you could help your friend/stranger in distress.

This would be nice, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay for it. --general aviation planes often have a standard jump-socket, because it's pretty hard to open the 'hood' to remove your jumper cables once the engine's started because of the whirling propeller. But the connector becomes a maintenance item and on a plane, if something's broken, you're required by law to fix it, remove it, or be grounded.
Even without a 'universal socket' you can still help people if you know how to open the hood.
The Jump Socket could be standardised. I am not sure how many ofus would be willing to install one in our cars. There would be takers for this socket where persons own more than one car.
There is a psuedo standard connector used, or at least could be used.
In quantity, it might not cost that much, but generally people won't want it, not will manufacturers want to have the stigma of being known to need boosting.
Not a bad idea. Manufacturers provide spare tires in case of a flat, this wouldn't be that different in principle. Still, I doubt it will be picked up by the manufacturers.
A good idea. Car manufacturers might be happier if they were shown that the universal connector works BOTH ways. Owners of vehicles with the universal connector could easily offer a jump-start to stranded motorists.
Gee, how is that different from jumper cable????
It works on the principle of a jumper cable - you don't have to removethe bonnet to get into the battery compartment and vice-versa for thestranded car. Very convenient and time saving. All cars having thisJumpstart socket could have a small board/placard(with the intitials JS) to identify a car with a Universal Jumpstart socket
It would also be safer. As you should know, car batteries produce hydrogen gas. Sparks from connecting the jumper cables can ignite the gas causing the battery to explode. By locating the plug away from the battery it makes this far less likely. If the battery does explode anyway, you will be less likely to be injured.
This would also eliminate the possibility of the clamp popping off the battery post unexpectedly. This is a big problem on some cars that have awkwardly placed batteries.
This would also make it less likely for you to get grease on your clothes.
Seems to have already been done. . .

I'm not sure I would trust a cigarette lighter to handle the necessary amperage.
A cigarette lighter socket will definitely not handle such a high amerage, it will either blow the fuse or burn thethin guage wire of the cigarette lighter and will be a firehazard in the car. A dedicated Jump Socket with a highamerage fuse is the best bet.
