grocery club cards for charity | |||||||||||||||||
i normally dont shop at major grocery stores, so when i find myself in the check out line of one of them and see people swiping their club cards i know that i am not going to get the price that was listed. sometimes i tell the clerk i lost my card, and they will offer to let me use their number. even if i had a card i would never use it enough to earn the bonuses. my idea is for the stores to offer a charity a chance to capitalize on this, by offering to let them accrue the bonus points from people like me, and i will still be able to get the special price. by having the clerks offer a persons bonus points to go to charity i sure they would find even the loyal shoppers would donate

Who knows how grocery stores recoup their offered savings? My take on it is that by giving your permission to track your purchases (the primary intent of these cards), the stores can save money they would otherwise spend on market research. Many savings deals are also primarily intended to encourage you to buy additional products.
Some stores, like Whole Foods Market, instead offer to donate savings (especially from reusing your own bags rather than theirs) to charity.
