The idea is similar to the front mounted mirrors but the idea is side looking cameras mounted as far on the nose of the car as possible to look around objects such as trees, signs, SUVs and other objects that block a drivers view when trying to pull out from a stop. Could be in back as well for pulling from parking spaces. The monitor could be mounted on the doors just below the windows. so you are looking in the direction of the traffic (either split screen video or switchable to pick a camera.

I've needed one of these on many occasions. They already equip some cars with rear view cameras, so you could just use the same hardware. Being that this would only be used occasionally, you could use the same display for side viewing that you normally use for rear viewing by just pressing a button.

Would definitely help when backing out of our driveway (perpendicular to street), especially if other parked cars blocked the view). If it could provide a panorama image, or pan to show as much of a scene as it has angle to.
