Luggage carts not carousel | |||||||||||||||||
I've always wondered why the airlines couldn't just bring the cart from the plane into the baggage-claim area, instead of putting it on a carousel. Currently, they handle your luggage two times when they could simply bring the luggage carts--as they were unloaded from the plane--directly into the building as they are. I suggest it be pulled to an automated 'track' that would immediately bring the luggage-wagons into the building, to the correct baggage claim area. This way, the luggage would make it from the plane back to the travelers much more quickly. It would only be handled while leaving the plane, so fewer employees would be needed. Baggage carousels break and damage luggage--with this system, your bags would sit nicely in the cart without piling or rolling or jamming. You would probably want to make the carts longer, lower and more narrow so when they reached the baggage claim, the bags would be easier for customers to pick-up. Luggage that needs to change planes could (still) be put on different carts that wouldn't be brought into the baggage claim area--no change here. Although I prefer it, they wouldn't have to use automated pull-cables in the floor of the building to move the carts--they could use the outdoor-tractor to pull if it was electric. Either way, this seems quicker, cheaper and simpler than what they do now. You'll need dedicated 'roads' for the carts (and tractor) in the baggage claim area, but that's what the carousel is like anyway. If you're afraid the carts would be dirty or snowy, you could design these 'roads' to only expose the bay of the cart, hiding the wheels. This seems like such a simple idea to me. I don't fly that much and I seldom check luggage, so I'm no expert, but I'm sure some of you can evaluate this and tell me if I'm cracked.

A: the inside infrastructure is set up for individual luggage, not the carrier.
B: There may be certain liability allowing the customers accessing the carrier, in injury and possible damage to other fliers luggage, to get their own.
classicsat, I appreciate your comment. I think I can rebutt both of your points:
A. then redesign the inside infrastructure. I'm saving thousands of people thousands of minutes and dollars by eliminating the unneeded transfer of luggage from the carts to the carousel, and I'm also eliminating the need for maintenance on the carousel. The ones in Kansas City always overload and stop half-way through the luggage of a flight. Thats's when I thought of this idea.
B. A newly designed luggage wagon could be configured to present the luggage at the same height, overreach, etc as a current carousel to preclude the risk of injury. And I already mentioned that it should be in a track so the people are protected from the wheels. As for one person damaging another person's luggage, that seems unlikely to me and could happen even now.
I wouldn't trust the airlines to take care of my luggage. Next time I travel, I'm shipping my luggage by courier. I have a nice flight, and my stuff arrives at my door.
