Speed gauge | |||||||||||||||||
I am getting old and prefer not to drive but when somebody asked me to drive (I still have a valid license) I found it a nuisance to look down to the dashboard to check my speed and a bit dangerous.If a strip dial was placed at the bottom of the windshield so that a red strip ran under a linear dial to indicate my speed it would help me keep my eyes on the road where they belong. The other dials are not as critical but staying at or slightly under the speed limit is.

You say 'am getting old' like it snuck up on you.
Sand, I thought about this idea for a minute and came up with a suggestion. How about a light somewhere on the dashboard that changes color at a set speed? If your going about the desired speed, it would be green. If you go too slow it would turn yellow and if you go to fast, red. You would bo able to see the color in your peripheral vision, so you wouldn't have to look down. If the car has GPS navigation, it could automatically look up the speed limit for the road you're on and set the device appropriately for you. If you don't have GPS, you set the speed manually similarly to a cruise control.
I had no physiological problems through my 70's but these last few weeks as I approach my middle 80's a few small problems have arisen. I have kept away from driving as the public transportation system is very adequate here in Helsinki. But my wife is having real problems in vision and hearing in her 70's and she drives a lot. So I am trying to help out. The linear speed gauge scale at the base of the windshield would help.
