Sunroom with solar panel | |||||||||||||||||
How about a sunroom with a sleek, seamless solar energy panel built into the roof? It could collect extra power for nighttime heating in winter, and maybe save enough to run a refrigerator and a light in case of a power outage.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "sunroom", but what is the difference between putting a solar panel on a sunroom and putting one on any other roof?
Difference would be that the sunroom (or conservatory) could be designed with solar panel together as a unit, perhaps even as a kit. This would offer an opportunity for a more attractive look as well as manufacturing efficiencies.
If you put a solar panel (either PV or thermal of any sort) on the roof of a sunroom, it kind of ceases becoming a sunroom.
Glad you brought that up- progress is being made on transparent solar cells. Maybe Australia and Japan will see this technology first to market. http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/04/14/dyesol-solar-windows/http://www.aist.go.jp/aist_e/museum/science/12/12.html
So if you use your translucent solar panel with your translucent decking material, you'll still be able to see in your basement without turning on the light.
On the translucent solar panel, I think letting light through would be letting energy through. How can that be good?
Seems to me the people who live in glass houses...okay, maybe that's not funny.
I'd be interested in sending an email to the researchers who are working on the transparent solar panel on this one, but the fact that light comes through doesn't seem to bother them.
