Combine GPS-Radar detector | |||||||||||||||||
It seems like such a natural to combine a GPS and a radar detector in one unit. You fasten both to your windsheild and plug them into the cig-socket. I would've thought that by now someone would've made a unit that's both. I see that Uniden will make a plug that goes from a detector to a GPS to show you on the map where the radar signals originate. But that's not good enough. I want one unit. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9863313-1.html Also, though I don't use a detector now, I know that police are very biased against them (as they should be.) A couple of times when I've been pulled over, the first thing the officer asked was 'are you using a radar detector?' I'm sure if the answer was obvious, I would have less options--but if I just have a nav-screen on my windshield, maybe he'll be lenient. Maybe the two companies that do these have to get together to make this happen. Maybe it never will.

This is one if those combo device axiom things, where the combined product may not be as good as the individual parts could provide.Plus, because radar detectors are illegal in many places, it would increase the cost of the units in the markets where they are legal, plus it would be a larger lost investment if caught with one in one of the places where they are illegal, and they impose a "road punishment" where the device is at least seized, or at most destroyed on the spot.
Now some features of a radar detectors may be perfectly legal, whereby they can be incorporated into a GPS unit.
As far as I can tell, detectors are only illegal in Virginia and Washington DC, but it's supposedly illegal to fasten things to your windshield (even GPS's)in more states. I almost can't believe the windshield fastening would be enforced, but I don't live in one of those states.
