I know a lot of people suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome and if they don't they may some day. This is sad since computers provide us with so much entertainment. I've been using a computer for about 13 years and apparently that's how long it takes for a person to recognize the symptoms. I believe the problem can be solved by redesigning the mouse but since people aren't willing to accept radical changes, the implementation of an adequate pointing device will take years. In the mean time, use a Mouse Buddy. I've actually made 2 prototypes for this invention. It's simple. Produce a soft, contoured extension which can be fastened with double-sided tape to the side of any mouse which allows your hand to rest flat while pointing. Most current mouse designs only allow for 2 fingers to rest on the mouse while your ring and pinkie finger dangle down the side. With the Mouse Buddy you can cup your whole hand around the mouse in a more natural fashion. I think the best material for the Mouse Buddy would be the soft foam rubber they use in squeezable stress-release balls. Upon production they can be marketed towards large companies as gifts for their employees with their company logo imprinted on the side. You know, instead of stress-release balls.

Without testing it myself, I can't know if I would like it. I find using my mouse to be very comfortable, it's typing that's the problem (for me). My secret to using the mouse is to rest my entire arm on something. I actually put a cushioned bar-stool next to my chair to rest my elbow on. The heel of my hand rests on the desk. With both my elbow and wrist supported, my arm can stay completely relaxed. Now, if I could only find a way to rest my arms while I type...
