This isn't so much an idea, but a question - why can't we buy computers with build in DSL or Cable modems, just like we used to buy computers with regular modems built in?

1 less cable would definitely be welcome.

While we're at it, why don't we have routers with built in DSL or Cable modems?

This exists, however there are so many broadband standards that your PC would be limited to a certain geography. There is no "swiss army knife" of modems unfortunately. Additionally, external routers/firewalls help protect your computer from itself (not perfect) - in most situations people have more than one computer.
