ps, stop the oil subsidies and it will put an end to fuel inefficient vehicles right quick!
Capitalism isn't based on supply and demand, it's based on competition. The goal of the competition is to get more money. Competitors will naturally try to use any means they can to get more money. If they can find a way to get money through subsidies, they will do it. It may be illogical to subsidize unprofitable businesses, but politics make the illogical logical.
Dwane has accurately pointed out the reason we have them, but I think we need more politicians that can say "No". "No, No NO!".
Yes, myparadigm, I agree, stop subsudies.
And stop this stupid bailout.
Politicians managing subsidies is a recipe for disaster. In theory, there are times when Vision suggest paying to plant a seed will more than pay for itself in the future.
But politicians pay Iowans for ethanol, forgetting that taking a lot of corn away from food would be a huge problem, but taking just a little would not do much good. But since Iowa is the early primary, people are willing to spend tax billions over decades on a horribly flawed idea.
Voters appear to be too stupid to elect politicians qualified to manage subsidies.
In parts of South America, many farmers get more money for planting and harvesting drug crops than food crops. It's a great example of Capitalism in action.
The point is that if we allow our food supply to compete with pure capitalism then food prices will have to be priced as high as illicit products.
If you hate socialism then be consistent. Demand that we stop building bridges, roads, libraries, water treatment plants, traffic lights. Let's stop enforcing and creating drug laws, homicide laws, rape laws. Let's stop funding disease research, medical research, and other research such as that which led to the Internet. ETC . . .
I don't think people really want to stamp out socialism.
