After laughing at McCain's brother calling 911 to report slow traffic (http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1008/564210.html), I realized that there really isn't a great source for non-emergency calls to the police. Some situations are simply not dire enough for 911 but still require assistance/information rather quickly. It could be helpful if there was a three-digit phone number, similar to 911, that could route a caller to the information desk at the nearest police station. This would be particularly helpful when traveling far from home, when someone may not even know which county they're in.

what about calling your local police department?
Many parts of the US use 211 for non-emergencies. This may become universal.
I just love how when you call, they ask 'what's your emergency?', you go through the whole story, then they say 'I'll connect you to the police' (or fire or whichever) and you tell the whole story again.
I can't believe it's always that way everywhere? I've actually called and started with 'connect me to the sheriff', but they wouldn't until they knew the reason.
I just discovered that 211 is only intended for community services, not police calls. 311 is assigned for non-emergency police and fire dept calls nationwide.
