GPS Tourism Using iphones | |||||||||||||||||
In a few places like Key West and Charleston, you can rent a device that mashes up a gps with an mp3. Basically, as you move around, it knows precisely where you are and tells you what you're seeing. I've done it and it's pretty cool. HOWEVER, it's a closed system. The content is controlled and the device is stand alone. Iphones have gps built in. Why not create open source gps tourism content and sell it through itunes? So, let's say you're going to Boston next weekend. You might browse through all the tours you could take. Perhaps you settle on the walking tour of Beacon Hill created by a Harvard professor in his spare time, plus maybe a pub tour created by some knucklehead. They might cost $5 each, with Apple sharing the revenue with the content providers. You could take the tours at your own pace and at your own time. There could be any number of specialized tours that wouldn't exist in the real world. It would also be cheaper than taking real tours. It could be a giant area of content for Apple, all of which would cost them nothing, since it's provided by outsiders.

Sounds excellent! It would be like hiring your own local guide to show you around.
This is a good idea. Ian and Barry actually thought of this years ago, especially geared toward campus tours. I think that your addition of GPS is a good one.
awesome idea and hope an app developer stumbles upon it!
This is already in production. Check out geovative.com, where you can create, search for, and download your own GPS tours. Supported devices are currently: Garmin, TomTom, Windows Mobile smartphones, iPods/mp3 players, and iPhone is coming soon!
