I envision a translucent lit acrylic (or some strong, light transparent material) that is molded into an elongated bell-like shape that hangs at about average human shoulder height. Music can be piped in via speakers added to the hood which allows for social smoking in a nice little isolation area. The hood is equipped with a vacuum a la kitchen stove hood to suck up cigarette smoke, thus the bell-like shape. I think it would look very Blade Runnerish because light would be fed into the translucent material making it even more cool to look at.

I think it would be really hard to talk to people from inside your smoker's bell jar, what with the vacuum and all.

I'm also trying to guess how you expect this to be supported--is it something they 'wear' with the weight supported on their shoulders, or is it mounted on the back of their desk-chair, or is this only for the 'smoking lounge' part of the cafeteria, hanging by wires from the ceiling, so smokers don't have to go outside for their hourly break?

Seems you plan for it to be stationary, what with lighting and vacuum, it'll require hoses and wires. I envision it looking like a cross between a space-helmet and a old-fashioned ladies hair dryer.

No, this isn't a personal device. This device would be rather large, large enough to accommodate 15-20 people under it. Yes, it would have to be suspended via wires and such but the wires could we part of the design aesthetics as the supports for the wire could either be molded from the device or screwed into it. The benefits of a device like this is that you could have indoor smoking without having cigarette smoke wafting throughout the immediate area, much like the isolating characteristic of a range hood.

well, that changes the picture I'm seeing of it quite a bit, but you just turned a $200 device into a $5000 installation. I'm not sure that there's a place where you can get 15 smokers together and still even need this.

I think most bars still allow smoking generally (??I don't know, I don't smoke). Maybe you're trying to make a way to welcome the non-smokers back to the bar by ensuring that there will still be air for them to breath? --I know I don't go to them because I dislike the smoke, but I also don't like $4 beers. But if all the 'fun' is in the 'smoking dome', I'll still feel excluded (??)

Even in restaurants that have smoking seating, the whole place generally smells of it--it's hard to keep the wind from blowing it around when the door is opened, for example.

Where do you plan to install these? Bars? Restaurants? Homes? Business?

This contraption is definitely more for places like clubs, large bars, or hotels, not a small space item.
