Classified Super Computers | |||||||||||||||||
As of right now all major super computers are classified. So how do we get a super computer, well we cant unless Bill Gates has something to say about it. If Bill Gates could figure out how to make a supercomputer inexpensive, they would number one become declassified because they would be made at an increase in frequency allowing the US government to label them classified. Look at your lap top, it can run faster than the supercomputers of the 70's.

my college made a supercomputer from 5 playstation3 cell processors, it's not doable for everyone, the circuitry changes and programming are pretty advanced, but if they released the software and instructions, almost anyone could have a supercomputer for about $3,000, thats pretty inexpensive as far as computers go.
Who says supercomputers are classified? There are supercomputers that belong to the govt that are used for classified research, so they're not available for civilians to use, but supercomputers are not themselves classified. In fact, supercomputers are built by civilian companies, likeCray , who will gladly sell you one if you can come up with the money.
As of right now they are look it up.
Its probably an illegal proposition.
Look it up? Why don't you help me out here with a link. I provided a link above to Cray. If you click on it, it will take you to their site where you can buy a supercomputer(if you can afford one).
I concur with Dwane. Particular supercomputers are classified because of what they are used for. That does not mean they are generally illegal or unavailable to those that want or need them.
Processing clusters can be build with a number of fairly typical PCs.
they don't need to be classified to keep them out of our enemies' hands. Just ITAR regulated.

Not true. Check out the Top500 list. As of November 2008 three out of 5 in the top 5 on the list are used for basic research.
So how do we get a super computer, well we cant unless Bill Gates has something to say about it.
Also not true. More than 87% of the supercomputers in the TOP500 are running Linux, which is Free (as in free speech, not free lunch).
If you want to build one yourself, you may. There is even precedent for building supercomputers using donated hardware
