Why not have a hands free remote that could pause your DVD/DVR for you when you have to get up and leave the room. When you return, the movie starts back up, hands free! You'll never forget to pause you movie again, or almost drop your child fumbling with the remote.
The remote could be pressure sensitive in your chair, or Infra Red looking out from the TV in case there's more than one person in the room sitting in other chairs. A sensitivity adjustment will enable you to set a minimum amount that triggers it so your pet doesn't trip it and loose your place in the show.

You seem to request a form of artificial intelligence to track your movements and respond. A simple control button on your remote does the same thing without the expense and huge complication. Laziness to that extent does not seem worthwhile encouraging.
I don't know if this is actually what you mean, but rather than have it track your movements, you just need to speak "DVD PLAYER, PAUSE" "DVD PLAYER, PLAY" "TELEVISION, LOUDER".
Yes, I think this could work great if it was programmed well enough. Unfortunately, I still haven't had much luck with any of the voice recognition on my bank's telephone roll-over. I still even punch-in the numbers. But I guess someone has this working. Ford is really pushing their 'Sync' system.
How about making a remote with one big button that just pauses? It could look sort of like the "Easy" button in the Staples comercial. Of course it would say "Pause" instead of "Easy". You could set it on your coffee table or wherever it would be convenient.
