Class summaries on line | |||||||||||||||||
Have you ever worried that what you learn in class may be forgotten one day? Don’t you want to be able to re-fresh your memory quickly without re-reading the whole class material (sometimes more than 1000 pages per subject)? Here is a suggestion: How about if SOM had a special link for summaries of different classes. Each class summary will be made of no more than 5-10 pages (a group of one-page documents) with good visual explanations of the main ideas and principles learned in class. This documents will be similar to the cheat sheets, but with great explanations. As far as I know, there is no other business school with such a system. Example: You are at your summer internship and are given the task of performing a future cash flow (FCF) analysis of a project. What do you do – enter the SOM website, click on “Courses summaries”, then go to “Sourcing and Managing Funds” and open the one-page document describing how to calculate the FCF. Benefits:1. You will always be prepared for your future job. 2. It will take no time to re-fresh your memory. Example: If you want to re-fresh your knowledge, you’d rather re-read the same textbook than another one on the same subject. 3. This system may serve as a guiding light for professors to know what has been taught in other courses. 4. Easy and universal web access.

Who is SOM? I googled it and came up with a huge list of different organisations.
This idea might be helpful sometimes, but much of the time the summary will not have the specific info you need. A short summary can only cover the basics. I can usually remember the basics from a class; it's the details I can't remember.
Hey Andrey, great idea.. This will help in easy retrieval of important concepts we learn in class.. the only hitch could be standardization of notes and ensuring that only the best get listed in this database.
I think accounting is funny, re: FCF; always trying to figure out what to do with the money you haven't earned yet. I know that you all think it's useful, but to me, it's not money until it's in the bank.
As for a way to remember your whole schooling, yes, I wish I could remember every thing I've ever known and I'm sure it would help me. But even if I had a one-page sheet to jog my memory about my classes in college, they were so long ago and most of that stuff I haven't missed needing. Yes, I would be better off to know it, but humans just aren't designed that well.
Dwane,
I'm pretty confident that in this case SOM stands for Yale School of Management.
This might be useful for some basic math classes. However, most topics change over time. When I found my old textbooks and the professors' accompanying lecture notes in subjects that pertain directly to my current career field, they were obsolete in many ways. Times really do change! Many courses such as business(management theories), new scientific findings (physics, astonomy), and even criteria for writing college term papers (English) are examples. The internet is a great source of knowledge. So many search engines, so many updates of fresh material. Never fear the internet is here!
