I don't know if I'm allowed to submit ideas about existing models of cars, but I think a New Beetle station wagon would be cool. It'd have the same fun look of the Beetle, but have more room and functionality. They could use the longer wheelbase of the Passat and the same front end of the existing Beetle, so it wouldn't be hard to manufacture. I like cars that look different from everything else on the road, and if they're practical as well, great. VW has a really nice diesel engine already, too.

I don't know if you're a real VW guy, but if you are, you'll know that there was a kit to make the classic Beetle into a van, "Vandetta".

Wouldn't surprise me to see someone offering a kit like this now, but a modern VW is an expensive car and when I go into O'reilly's and ask for most of the parts on my daughter's Cabrio, they either have to order or can't even get the part at all. Not KISS anymore. And the VW dealer gets $60 for a plastic door handle.
But I agree with you on the unusual car thing--much more fun than a boring sedan.
Nice van conversion, except for the slightly awkward transition behind the side door. But the new Beetle is unibody, so you're stuck with the existing roof frame if you want to do a conversion. Aren't you?
I'd buy a conversion kit if there was one available for the new Beetle.
An extension really isn't that hard, just add a piece of body after the C pillar.
Just look at most other cars that have sedan and wagon versions, it really is not that hard of a concept.
