I think this came to me in a dream many years ago. I was outside at dusk on a cool summer day with some friends. The stars were just coming out. We were on a slightly inclined hill side in what looked to be a park, with many trees around us but with a large clear view of the sky. There were many people around us, laying on blankets, drinking, eating, etc. I looked up towards the sky and hanging there was a giant white screen. I laid back down on a blanket and folded my hands behind my back and with the sky darkening, the movie began to play, with the soundtrack coming from all around us. The stars around the screen provided a neat background for the film as we watched. I've always thought that would be a very cool way to watch movies.

You might have problems with neighbors who want to sleep. If the technology is possible I can see all sorts of commercial applications to destroy the peace of a natural sky.

The challenge would be how to make the screen. If the clouds were just right, you could use them for a screen, but that would happen way too rarely. A screen could be made out of a very light but strong material that could be supported by a helium balloon. The bottom of the screen could be tethered to the ground to keep it in place. A pair of horizotal bars could run along the top and bottom to hold it open. The balloon could be black so it would be invisible above the screen at night. The screen could be a net-like mesh to let the breeze blow through. Some stars might be visible through the screen, which might be kind of cool. You would want the prevailing winds to hit it from the back, so it would tend to angle downward toward the viewing area.

I don't know if this would be practical, but it's an interesting thought experiment.

We still have a drive-in theater we go to in the summer and I long- ago discovered that if I lay down in the bed of the pick-up to watch, I'll be asleep in the first twenty minutes. I think this effect would be worse for the helium balloon movie.

We can do this right now with modern technology although it may not be as dramatic as the notion of an actual screen in the sky.Just get glasses that have the built in micro LCD TV/ movie screens and watch any program you want while layng in a field at night either by yourself or at an actual company that shows new movies in this new fashion. This would solve the noise and light pollution problem with neighbors and would in essence be the same thing.
