randomizing start of alphabet | |||||||||||||||||
Dan Kahan has the nice idea of randomizing the alphabet. Sounds crazy. But there is interesting empiricism that people whose name starts earlier in the alphabet get an unfair advantage at various parts of life. California has the cool idea of randomizing the alphabet so that for the purpose of listing candidates for office they will start alphabet in different elections with different random letters. So candidates whoose name starts with A(yres) might not have unfair advantage of always being seen first. Why not use this in other places. The government could announce a new starting letter of the alphabet each month.. Children could line up for research based on this random starting letter. There would no longer be the arms race for AAAAAAcme Glass company in the Yellow Pages.

Great idea, school interviews in alphabetical order play havoc with Zeke Zanzabar..by the time teachers get to him theya re fed up :) Aaron Aardvark does well though :)
Although this might result in democracy in some situations, it would cause chaos in many areas that use the present arrangement to locate material.
Some colleges use reverse alphabetical order for registration in the spring semester. You may want to experiment with different ways of reordering the alphabet with the WhyNot? User List - it is current using the standard one.
