To use a piece of aluminium pipe to act as the tube in a bicycle tyre. This would be most appreciated in olmpic events like where they ride indoors around that oval track. This idea would also be practical in mountain bikes that use suspension, as without the suspension the ride would be very bumpy. The other way it could be done is to use a rim that was inverted so you have a smooth looking curve on the outside and then maybe line the curve with a sort of rubber on a reel device to coat the curve with rubber, so that you have a tyre. I mean the profile of the tyre wouldnt be the best for offroad but for on road use, you wont get any punctures and will be able to ride with the least amount of rolling resistance.

I don't think an aluminum pipe is a good choice as it would be heavier than a regular tube and hard to assemble. It would also be prone to getting dents if used off-road, which would make for a really bumpy ride. The second suggestion might work though, especially for track racing. I doubt that you are going to see any punctures on an Olympic indoor track anyway, but the reduced rolling resistance might be beneficial. For road and off-road bikes, where flats are more likely, you can use airless tires that are already available.
thanks Dwane, I will be sure to order some although i am based in australia.
