Although the old automat gave the appearance of total mechanization of the restaurant business there was a very busy section behind the little windows where employees continuously replaced the items purchased. It is possible today with microwave instant heating and proper refrigeration units to create a truly huge walk-in slot machine but the initial investment would probably be huge until the concept produced mass produced storage components more cheaply. And the additional individual cooling and heating unit would probably be quite uneconomical of space compared to current systems where bulk storage conserves space. Nevertheless it is possible and may come about. I doubt there will be any improvement in the final product.
