SMS FOR THE OLD | |||||||||||||||||
I have found a lot of aged people struggling to sendsms with the normal keypad/dialpad of a normal cellphone.Cellphones with a fullsize keypad is quite expensive. Why not have a small semi-rotary key which can be moved manuallyto select the alphabet/numerical of their choice and then depressthem to enter them. This sort of a cellphone should be a boon tooldtimers who would like to send sms.

Keyboards for regular computers are very inexpensive. There is no reason a larger keyboard could not be purchased separately for a cellphone at small expense and plugged into a universal receptor provided on the phone for those who needed it.
The problem with using a full sized keyboard is that it's not pocket-sized, which defeats one of the main advantages of a cellphone. I don't know if it would help the elderly, but I just now thought of a way to make texting faster. I'll post it as a separate idea.
The idea here is not to use a full keyboard but the standard key boardof a conventional cellphone. For example : The semi-rotatory keywill have 1 abc . The user will rotate the rotary key to select thedesired alphabet or number - he takes his own time to depress andselect a alphabet or number whereas in a conventional cellphonekeypad the number automatically jumps to the next alphabet or numberwhich the elderly will find very difficult to co-ordinate the depressingfunction.
Pepindia, sorry, my post above was a response to sand's comment, not your original post. I see what you mean about the user having to hurry somewhat using the conventional SMS typing system. If you're too slow, it will lock in letters you don't want. This would also be solved by my suggestion here.
I'm not really sure how your idea works. You need to describe it better.
Old people don't really SMS.
The idea is to give the old timers to take their own time in typing.I understand ur idea to have all the alphabets/number being displayedon the screen and then choose the alphabet/number to be typed. Thisis a good idea since no major changes are required to conventionalkeyboard. My idea calls for a semi or a full rotory key whichwill display the alphabets/numbers on screen when the rotory key is moved up or down to select the desired alphabet/number. The full rotorykey can be used for the punctuation marks, the semi-rotary key toselect the alphabets/numbers. SMS for the old is not a luxurythey deserve a better deal, they can save quite a bit during thepresent slow down.
