With new atomic battery technologies being invented they are becoming more and more practical. The modern atomic battery can last 20 years, and is .5% efficient at converting atomic heat into electrical energy.(info gotten from wiki)

If we had an atomic powered cell phone that had a low current atomic battery that built up charge during the night released it as you called, you would have a cell phone that never died. Now you just need to find a cheap monthly phone service plan.

But with an even higher power source you could possibly transmit any radio signal further and have a hand held 2-way radio that you could talk to friends with up to 10 miles away, with no external power supply.

Also what if we considered an atomic powered laptop. Soon they will start making affordable solid state drives and oled screens which means laptops will require drastically less energy and therefore may be in the range of low power atomic batteries. This would be good on car trips or long plane flights where current batteries only last for about 1.5 hours.

What about power tools? You'd be able to build a house in a remote area without the use of a gas powered generator. Would these radioactive materials be better, or worse for the planet than burning fossil fuels to power the power grid?

What if we didn't need to rely on those plugs in the walls of our houses? Or buying batteries from the store that end up in land fills, and cost too much anyway?

What about Alaska where it's too cold to have electrical power because batteries freeze and there is no sun for most of the day for solar power? Here the only way to store energy in the winter is in wood or gas. You could now use electrical instead of chemical energy during the winter, opening up whole new areas to development. Making previously uninhabitable places habitable. No more cabin fever, with your new low power electrical entertainment center!

Will government sacrifice scientific progress again in exchange for their political agendas?

Will people abuse these radioactive materials and make dirty bombs? Or are these materials almost inert after 20 years, and they're nothing worth worrying about? Let's see how popular this idea is.

The public is leery about atomic batteries in space probes that are leaving Earth for the outer planets. We simply don't have either the confidence or control to deal with this stuff on a daily basis.

Many people freak out as soon as they hear the words 'radioactive' or 'nuclear energy'. I think it would be possible to make atomic batteries that are safe enough for consumer use. They would probably use something like tritium, which is not very dangerous or useful for terrorists. They use tritium in betalights and other similar gadgets.
