Fair Trade Brothels | |||||||||||||||||
I love to travel to poor countries. When I travel, I see poor prostitutes and I like to pay for their sexual services because, by doing so, I allow poor women to earn money and make better live for themselves and their families. Sex tourism leads to social justice and a more equitable distribution of wealth. I also believe that women in rich countries charge too high a price for sexual services either in the formal market (prostitutes charging $300 per hour) or in the informal market (women only marrying men who spend at least $300 per hour on her). Using the services of poor women encourages more competition in the international market for sexual services and hence leads to fairer prices. For too long women in rich countries have been price gouging men. Whenever I go to poor countries like Russia, I am worried that maybe some of the prostitutes I visit are actually slaves who are treated badly by mobsters. What I want is some organization to create an accredited and certified fair-trade brothel in poor countries. This fair-trade brothel guarantees that all women who work there do so without any coercion. It also guarantees basic medical checkups, e.g. checkups for sexually transmitted infections. Ensuring that prostitutes in poor countries are happy and clean should increase the demand for their services. Men or even women who visit these prostitutes can do so with pride and honor, knowing that they are helping to alleviate inequality. Having sex has health benefits as well. Flesh-to-flesh contact has been shown to relieve stress. Men who ejaculate often reduce their risk of prostate cancer. Women who swallow semen reduce the risk of getting depression or hypertension. Fair-trade brothels can benefit everyone.

I think prostitution should be legal. It would be safer for everyone, especially the prostitutes, if the industry was properly regulated and monitored.
This idea is full of fail. Why don't you help poor women by donating to their families, instead of using them for your own pleasure? It sounds like you just want a cheaper product and a lower risk of STDs. I like your health benefits claim too. It's too bad you don't need a prostitute to ejaculate. Try masturbating. And get a girlfriend while you're at it.
The proposal to legalize prostitution faces all sorts of very difficult problems beyond the prosecution of sex workers for what might be an occupation that fills a demand through the mutual consent of seller and buyer. I have never had any contact with prostitutes so my opinions are, most probably, not well informed but there are obviously very large problems involving general social condemnation, religious prejudices, long standing legal and political attitudes, powerful psychological difficulties amongst participants, criminal activities involving slavery, drug addiction and violence, blackmail, health problems and so forth making no decision in the matter simple and easy. It is unlikely that either complete acceptance or complete banning of prostitution can be accomplished within prevailing social and legal attitudes.
I think Oral is trying to convince himself that something he's doing bad is somehow good. As a believer in monogamous relationships as the foundation for a successful society, I can't ever agree that paying a stranger for sex is a good idea. It's bad for your psyche and for her's too.
But I do know that sex is traded and it can't be stopped. Just check 'erotic services' on craigslist or check 'escorts' in the phone book. We all know that these amount to prostitution, so although I'm usually against laws, the ineffectiveness of the anti-prostitution law pretty much serves to just keep it out of sight of the mainstream. I guess that's about where I want it, so I don't complain, even though I do believe outlawing it is probably wrong.
Movement in this direction is being taken by various locales and sex worker support groups.
Sex-trade workersin the Netherlands formed the world's first trade union for prostitutes, a year after the government legalised brothels.
The new union will belong to the national trade union federation, allowing prostitutes to negotiate a collective agreement with brothel owners. The Netherlands also require all registered sex workers to undergo routine health screenings and the government there is implementing a variety of new practices to weed out and discourage coerced sex work.
The International Union of Sex Workers (IUSW) is a United Kingdom based trade union for sex workers. It campaigns for the decriminalisation of prostitution, and to have sex work acknowledged as viable labour. In 2002, members voted to affiliate with the GMB, a general workers union. The union now has official recognition as the sex industry branch of the GMB. Some of the services offered by the union include: self-defense classes, free legal advice and training for members who wish to leave the sex industry.
So even if commenters do not see the value of such a program it seems that many in the industries involved would welcome such a system.
