Carry-on Luggage | |||||||||||||||||
In my opinion, airport security in the United States has crossed the line from being cautious to being paranoid. I am all in favor of doing what is necessary to keep the general population safe, but our current methods can be improved. As everyone probably knows, due to semi-recent changes in airport security protocols, liquids and such are prohibited beyond the security checkpoint unless the liquids fit certain criteria. With this in mind, carry-on luggage has become a thing of the past for the frequent traveler because it prevents a passenger from packing all of the essentials for a quick trip. For example, contact lens solution, eye drops, deodorant, toothpaste, nail clippers, shaving cream, and razor blades (to name a few) either have to be left at home, or stored in checked luggage. For those of us who prefer to carry luggage onboard the aircraft, we always have a 2nd step in our travel process; either check our luggage, or carry it onboard with the intentions of purchasing new toiletries when we arrive at our destination. MY PROPOSITION: Why don't we just lock the overhead bins? If we allow everyday toiletries in the passenger cabin, but limit access to the items when the cabin door shuts (much like the use of cell phones), it isn't much different than having the luggage checked. The difference is that passengers who choose to carry luggage on will no longer have to partially pack in order to satisfy security standards. I can foresee some issues with my initial proposal, but I hope that through discussion, we can find a viable alternative to the current methods.

I like this idea. This would allow us to carry lighters and knitting needles on airplanes.
Excellent idea! And perhaps all the bins could be locked or unlocked simultaneously by one of the cabin crew, to speed up the process.I have had my pocket knife confiscated, and the locked bins would eliminate this annoyance.
There would need to be a way to separate the carry-on from the "personal item" (i.e. laptop, purse etc.). With more airlines offering wifi on bard, the would not want to limit the use of this service by having laptops locked up in the overhead bin.
I don't have the answer . . . but there are a lot of things to consider.
this is f-ing retarded because...
1)people cant get stuff during the flight2)do you think a stupid lock on the bin is gonna prevent someone malicious from opening them?3)imagine the the amount of extra work required to create such a system...!4)what can you need that badly on a quick flight that you cant by for few pennies when you get to your destination?5) and the list goes on...
