Error Codes | |||||||||||||||||
Right now you can plug a device into your car when it has an error. This device will download all known error codes from your car. The better ones can map the known error number to readable text descriptions of the error. Why not put a small display to the car dashboard whose only job is to print these error codes when they occur. Automotive manufacturers should also give a book containing all of the error codes and their descriptions.

Even better, why not just have the display tell you the fault description directly instead of a code? Then you don't need a book. Of course the reason they don't is because the dealers want you to bring your car in so they can charge you to fix it.
I'd be content with just an error code spit out. The displays to show the entire error would likely be expensive. This is a quick and easy solution to the problem.
A dedicated display would add cost.
Most cars these days have at least an electronic (LCD or VFD) odometer, which could easily display the code.
Newer cars have all electronic instruments, which could also display system troubles.
