There's a construction project going on in Tampa, FL now to widen the part of the interstate that goes through the middle of the city so there will be 4 lanes in each direction instead of 3. The northbound portion is just about finished. It was carved out of a piece of land that previously had houses and commercial on it. Now here's the idea. Instead of thinking symetrically the way they're doing (tearing down the old northbound lanes so they can add 1 more southbound lane) they should have taken, and should take for future projects, an asymetrical approach. Instead of tearing down the old section they should have just taken down the concrete divider that separated the northbound and southbound lanes and turned that whole stretch of highway into southbound lanes. That would have given the southbound side 7 lanes versus the northbound's 4 lanes but so what? Once a day, either coming or going, every commuter would have had an easier trip.
