Gangs in prison, and elsewhere, have all sorts if tattoos showing which gang they're affiliated with. We should add a new intake procedure at all prisons that says if you have a tattoo for any gang anywhere on your skin then you'll get free tattoos from several other gangs added to your skin. This could cause a tattoo arms race, with prisoners trying to convert the new symbols into some other sort of picture (probably some sort of insult). The remedy to that would be to simply add the same embellishment to the insignia they already have on their skin for their own gang.

semiotic overload --> sounds like a cool idea (and applied to other contexts may be).However, I think that tattooing a person (eventually against their will) is not really acceptable AND what good would this do for the prison inmates in terms of crime, violence etc.? I think that, just because the prisoners cannot relate that easily to one another anymore as collective gang, structural operations of differentiation (2 can mug/rob/kill 1 easier than the other way around) would not be affected.Still the idea of packing say a computer as a "Microtosh" or "Macinsoft" has something great to it.cheers
