New Dive Computer | |||||||||||||||||
Hi all, shocking as it may sound, I actually do have a patent on a new type dive computer. The unit would basically capture/store the GPS info when the diver enters the water or at 1 atmosphere or last signal and mark it. Then at the diver returns to the surface or at 1 atmosphere, it starts requesting a signal and once captured, it gives you an approximate dive area. There is also a camera that captures video and stills. The other cool things is it will upload your pictures/data with GPS related data and all the other environmental data from dive like water temp, air temp, salinity, depth and all the other dive computer standard features. The unit can also send your data for dive review to help increase safety, pleasure and prolong your dive experiences. This could keep dive organizations more up to date and especially the ecologist. The other fun part is your buddy could tell you about a place and then you could download the details to your unit and show a boat captain where you want to go with precise details. Yes many dive sites have names and that is where the also helps, storing all the names with GPS locations with video and photos. The problem is, I need help building it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have spoken to some of the companies that make dive computers; they feel it is too advanced and not marketable. I have dived all around the world and the people want this. One of the hardest parts with new divers is keeping a log. Why they still give new divers a paper logs is stupid! Now when they add a dive buddy, the dive buddy could add details of the dive from a drop down menu like, too much weight used, now breathing normal, touching surface of coral with dive gear. They can also add other details for training from a dive instructor. This could be done on the unit or from a computer and sync with the unit/diver in question. Student completed section 1 of technical dive. Imagine you want a refresher on how to plan your dive with unit or with a dive planner, some of these refreshers would be available as a standard video feature. The possibilities are endless. The goal is to keep divers safe, reduce dive gear, increase the fun and provide valuable data to the dive and eco organizations in a effective and efficient manner. Thank you, Patrick

It sounds like a great concept and is very doable. Of course, you could modify this design in countless ways to either make it either cheaper(simplify it) or make it more capable(though more expensive). I'm afraid I can't help you as far as building one goes, way out of my depth(pardon the pun).
Maybe you should try contacting a GPS manufacturer. Maybe hrench could hook you up. I seem to recall him saying that he used to work with the guys that founded Garmin.
You might start by developing a simpler one, and then adding more features if they sell okay. That might reduce initial development costs.
Thank you Dwane. Your right about the options and cost. The problem with GPS people is they are not into sensing pressures that a dive computers gets in. I had an initial talk with 1 dive company but they backed out when I asken them to sign the NDA. Thanks for the help and vote.
