Bike lanes with raised curb | |||||||||||||||||
I noticed that in Scandinavia, the bike paths are separated from the car lanes by a thin curb, about an inch high and a few inches wide, rather than the painted lines we have in the USA. Cars would be much less likely to encroach onto the bike lane that way, and bikers would feel (and be) safer.

This might be a good idea, but it would cost a lot of money and there aren't enough cyclists in the States to get much support for such expenditures.
Here in Helsinki there are wide sidewalks with a painted line indicating that one section close to the automobile area of the road (which is separated by a curb)is devoted to bicycles. It seems to work quite well.
