Noisefree Computing | |||||||||||||||||
Computers tend to be noisy and annoying... to fix the problem, simply place the main box in one room (say, the kitchen) and the IO devices (monitors, keyboards etc) in another room, connect the box and IO devices with long extension cords.

I have discovered to my dismay that long cables are not appreciated by computers and signals become too weak to function properly. USB connections definitely have cable length problems.
my office desk is set up in my bedroom. When I'm doing CAD or gaming, the processor runs faster, so the fan speeds up. my wife says she can't sleep with me running the 'hair dryer.' It literally sounds like that. I've thought of running a dryer vent to get that heat outside.
Personally i have a 100 feet of boosted USB extension thanks to a cheap deal (10 bucks) i got when circuit city went bankrupt... it works fine (all but my monitor is USB)
The proper way would be to reduce fan cooling and increase passive cooling,. If fans must be used, use larger slower fans.
it may be more cost effective ( still insane) to just run the heating system outside than to run all that cable. many computers can be bought with liquid cooling systems, like the radiator system on a car. if you just extended the tubing through an exterior wall, you could have the heat exchange outside, along with the fan. in cool weather this would also greatly increase efficiency.
actually cost is the main motivation why I use cables, liquid cooling system for everything (5 harddrives), the CPU and the graphics card cost around 200-300 bucks, the cables costs like 60 bucks total if you buy it at pricewatch, and i can just use a powerful 10 dollar fan the cool everything I like the having radiator outside idea though
