Does everybody remember the old JVC Hi-Fi or Sony system, with a main body for control and separate speakers so that they can be placed at opposite ends of the room?
The main body for control would normally allow the intake of a cassette tape, or mini discs and a CD. Those devices tended to have an alarm, fm radio and remote control functions.
I would love to see somebody implement a device that would accept an iPod or iPhone in much same way the old Hi-Fis were.
