Electronic Highlighter | |||||||||||||||||
I was recently undertaking a new intellectual venture in Lean Six Sigma, and had checked out more than a few books from the library on the subject. I frequently found myself, (as I'm sure many students have) having to stop reading to write notes to myself about the topic. As I was reading, I thought to myself...Google scans a ridiculous number of books everyday, Adobe can convert images to text.... I'm sure there exists a framework for video capture that is seamless enough to do this for me..... SO: Why isn't there an electronic highlighter? 1. It would look just like a normal highlighter, but instead of ink, a camera would capture the text that the "wand" is passed over and translate it to a text file on your computer. 2. The device would work wirelessly, like a cordless mouse or keyboard, perhaps through bluetooth or some other existing platform. 3. The software could be designed to function as a plug-in, as to integrate seamlessly into MS Word... as I assume that is by far and away the most common text editor. Other functions and features of the device are suggestable.

Remember the days when cell phones were the size of shoe boxes? This is an awesome idea... almost making studying too easy. Your highlighter would probably be the size of a pack of highlighters, but I'd buy it if I was in school again.
Easiest is to just use a mouse. I do it all the time to read. I believe Acrobat reader can do that as permanent highlights, as can many word processors.
If you want to do it with a wand, I believe a tooch screen can do what you want.
If your computer has a CRT, you could use a light pen, but need a graphics card that supports it.
Classicsat, I think the idea is to use this for regular paper books. I think I remember seeing a pen-like device that could scan lines of print on paper into a computer. I don't know if it is available or what it was called.
