Tunnel fire supression | |||||||||||||||||
More tunnels are being built, and the inherent danger is fires. The idea is to install a track at the top of the tunnels that would transport multiple doughnut shaped inflatable seals, that would be remotely activated. They would be positioned ahead and behind the fire, and would inflate from wall-to-wall, and road to ceiling. When inflated, they would cut off oxygen to the fire and self extinguish the fire (or at least seriously reduce it. They also would prevent smoke from filling the down-wind side of the tunnel. The material to be used would be similar to the heat shields NASA used for space vehicle re-entry. Each seal would have two flaps to allow anyone captured in the fire area to escape. An alternative would be stationary seals positioned at regular intervals. This would be less complicated, but would not offer the added safety of maximum containment.
