The problem of the open fly in men’s pants has arisen several times in this forum since it seems to have troubled people frequently and the several solutions offered do not seem to supply a simple secure answer. Since I have been a victim of this forgetfulness on occasion I have tried to work out a sensible solution and have decided that a slightly radical change in the nature of the aperture is required. What seems to me might work is a triangular flap with the base of the triangle at the belt line and the apex down at the crotch with a small tab at the point permitting easy grabbing to pull it up and reveal an opening for relief. The edges of the triangle would have Velcro strips with matching and mating strips on the inside of the pant legs. It would be completely convenient and natural for the triangle to be dropped into place after the opening is appropriately used and the natural adhesion of the Velcro could secure the flap.Although the flap could be made to match the material of the rest of the pants it presents fashion opportunities for more macho expressions and might become as popular as the cod piece once was in historic times.

It has occurred to me after submission that if the triangular flap was an extension of the pants from one side and the Velcro strip ran along the other leg of the triangle the system would function as well without the necessity of holding the flap up while in use and the loose flap would be a strong reminder to close the opening as against the standard zipper today.
If it requires velcro, then I don't see how this is better than an ordinary velcro fly. I personally don't like velcro flies because velcro is noisy, but it will secure the fly automatically.
You could just have the two sides of the pants overlap by a larger margin, so the opening would be covered without actually securing it.
Another option would be to eliminate the button or snap at the top and have nothing but the zipper to close the pants. The zipper would have to be very sturdy and secure, but that can be done. The locking mechanism (that keeps the tab from slipping down on its own) would need to be very reliable.
Another option would be to have a snap at the waistband that can't be fastened unless the zipper is pulled up first. One way to do this would be to have a snap on each side of the zipper tab that snaps to each side of the waistband. The two sides of the waistband wouldn't be able to snap directly together. For example, you could put female snaps on both sides of the waistband and male snaps on both sides of the zipper tab. To fasten the snaps, you would have to put the zipper tab between the waist band snaps. The problem with this however, is that you would have to secure two snaps each time. You could snap both at the same time of course, but if one fails to snap securely, you might not realize it. Then the zipper will be the only thing holding your pants closed.
It might be possible to come up with another simple mechanism to prevent the snap or button from being secured until after the zipper is pulled up. I couldn't think of one just now, but maybe somebody here can come up with one.
I think the best option would be to just have a strong zipper securing the pants and nothing else. It would be hard to forget to zip it if it's the only thing keeping your pants on. It's also the fastest and simplest to use.
The problem with making your pants insecure when the fly is open is that you would have to physically hold up your pants at a public urinal and that would make an uncomfortable situation.
I always undo the button on my pants when I use a urinal. I thought everyone did. I don't go around watching other guys pee. But I can see your point.
