We recently purchased a small econo car. I quickly noticed when I drove I got 38MPG but when my wife drove it got less than 36MPG or on occasions, even lower. Did some quick research on the internet and discovered something like 10-15% savings can be realized by conservative driving techniques. I tested them and saw mine go up to over 40MPG. So, the idea is to build an electronic device that plugs into the plug all new cars have under the dash for troubleshooting (I forget the name of it). I believe the brake and accelerator are both output to this jack for reading. The driver could set presets and it would start giving a visual alarm (think progressive led's lighting up) when you were braking too hard or accelerating too hard. It would 'teach' people efficient driving. You could turn it into a game to see who could get the best gas mileage. You might even be able to get the gas mileage out of the same connector and have profiles. It could also potentially help reduce rear end collisions. They seem to be the most common accident now and are from people driving aggresively. You could also have a coded lock if you wanted where you could set some presets and it could record date/times those were exceeded then lock it out. Maybe not a bad idea just before you hand over the keys to your teen age son.
