Have you ever picked up your hone by mistake to find an unwanted caller? Well I did, and it will probably happen to me again in the future. You can of course be straight forward and tell the person you do not want him/her to call you again and hang up, or you could lie! But you could also engage a little button in your headset that creates static noise in the line, the level of noise can be turned up or down with a small knob or wheel depending on how much you hate the caller. It is easy to make, just introducing some level of magnetic field to the headset wires will do the trick. Let us say your mom calls while you are in a the middle of a hot date, let us assume that you are a really nice kid and want to pick up but do not want to talk for ever about her apple pie, so you pick up the phone say hi and listen for 10 seconds and then turn on some static noise and tell your mom you are losing connection...bingo!. This should be cheap to make any small magnet will do the trick , the wheel/knob will control the level of exposure to the magnetic field and will only introduce an extra few dollars to any hand set, may be one or two dollars tops.

The trick would become obvious if it became universal. It's simpler to be polite and honest and remark that it's a wrong number or that you must hang up and let it go at that. At least that works for me.
You are right sand, it is better to be honest. It is also true it will become obvious if it is universal. The truth is: many people lie to get off the phone, often times the person in other side knows that they are lying, and they them selves know that the other person knows they are lying but they still do it! This is one way to get around this dilemma. In theory this could be a software program you link to one of your hot buttons in your phone and the program will engage when you push the hot button , it generate a random set of artificial noises to simulate static noise or poor connection quality, the bigger the library of artificial noises the less obvious it becomes.
I know it sounds counter intuitive and may be silly to some, but why not?
