Today, almost all travel sites offer the same method for searching their inventories. You specify: a destination, where you're leaving from, the travel dates and whether you want flight+hotel+car bundled - then when the search is done, you can then sort by price and other criteria. Now, what if I didn't have a specific destination in mind? Say all I know is: where I'm leaving from, the dates of my travel and the budget that I have allocated for my travel. With the current available systems you would have to search each and every possible destination manually. Wouldn't it be useful to be able to do a destinationless travel search? The users can specify as little or as much detail as they possibly can and let the computers do the searching.

This very interesting concept would encourage new enterprise in places not well known and encourage fascinating exploration of parts of the Earth not on a normal agenda. Travel groups could be formed to even well known areas with agendas much more creative than the normal vacations.
I've never used a travel site or agent, but this sounds like a great idea. For many people on vacation, budget is a much more important criteria than destination.
I like this idea of leaving some fields more vague. I've tried to search for travel deals before, I don't care when I leave or get home as long as it's cheap enough, but I am limited to inputting exactly when I want to leave or come back.
Great idea! This could attract tourists to some less-well-known destinations.
Good idea !
I would apply the same logic to a Google Maps feature in which you could calculate a perimeter around a fixed starting point on the map.
For example : I am at point x and want to know what my bicycle range is in say half an hour's time.
The calculator would then check how far you could get via all roads surrounding the starting point.
This way you could visualise and assess the accessibility of every spot on the map.
You could do the same for multi-modal transportation.
This would be interesting when you want to buy a particular house and want to know about access.
Maybe this should be a separate thread.
An excellent idea.
This is the kind of thing the enhanced power of Information technology should be used for instead of it sitting there twiddling its thumbs!
